Little Did We Know

So the other day I was watching one of the multiple episodes of "Friends" I have stored up on our DVR and a thought struck me; little did those actors/actresses, producers and all the other people that were involved in that show know just what they were in store for when the pilot aired September 22, 1994.
How would they know that "how you doin?" would become a household phrase and that "the Rachel" would become the most requested haircut in the 90's? When this show started out, it was just a sitcom, but it became a way of life. These "friends" became the people that we would laugh and cry with for a decade.

This of course snowballed into an analogy for life. Think of your best friend. Think of your significant other. When you met them, chances are, you had no idea what would come from that meeting. You would not know that when you shook their hand or said "hello" for the first time that your life would be changed forever. There is no way for you to know that, but that's the point. That's what life and living is for.

You gave it a chance. Relationships need time to develop and grow. My "love" for "Friends" didn't happen after the first episode I watched. It probably took a couple of episodes for me to realize just how awesome it is. Same thing with friendships/marriage. The first few times a meeting or conversation took place, there would have been no way for me to know that I was talking to a lifelong best friend or the man I'm going to marry. It takes time, effort and some give and take.

Sometimes things are a little "off". Sometimes the jokes aren't funny. That doesn't translate into a reason for giving up. It's a reason to remember why the relationship started. A reason to remember that things aren't always perfect, but there's always the next time.

I know it sounds strange that I derived all of this from a show that has been over for 7 years {and that fact makes me feel old}, but I hope you see my point. Life is full of the unexpected, but you never know where that unexpected may take you. What may start out as just another run of the mill show, may turn into a comedy that all others are measured against. This day could very well be the start of something you could have never seen coming.

You may want to see how it goes and where it takes you. It could be more than you could have ever expected.
